Picture this. It’s 2:30AM. I wake up, wide awake, and think to myself, “This must be a hysterical pregnancy! I bet I’m not even pregnant! I bet the swelling in my ankle is due to a blood clot. What if it travels up my leg, and into my lungs, and that is all she wrote? I bet my blood pressure is out of whack, or my blood sugar, or something.”
I don’t know what it is. I guess because my first two visits weren’t as bright and shiny as I had pictured them to be, but I was irrationally lost in thought about all the horrible things that can go wrong in pregnancy. That’s what you get when you read What to expect when you are expecting before going to bed.
I went to the doctor this morning, and Jeff drove up for it. (Side note: If you work for an OB, or know someone who works for an OB, can you tell them that pregnant women tend to have a heightened sense of smell so lay off the Bath and Body works lotions….geez!) I was weighed, and have gained 0. 4 lbs. So, I am still down 2.6 lbs from pre-pregnancy weight. We heard Nugget’s heartbeat, a rousing 154 beats per minute and much louder than last time! I spoke to my doctor about concerns about my ankle, to which he shared that he doubted it was anything. He explained that some women are more prone to swelling, but since I am concerned, he is having me do a 24 hour urine sample. You are seeing me pose with the goodies I get to use to do this. In case you can’t see it, the sharpie above the yellow label says, “Keep cold.” Not only do I have to collect my urine for 24 hours, but I have to store it in the refrigerator! So, if you are coming over for a visit, that is not orange juice! My doctor told me that I need to drink my water, and to avoid sugar, sugar, sugar, to include sugar that comes from fruit (the only #$%%^&^ thing that tastes good!)
As far as Nugget goes, this week is a big one! Nugget is about 3.4 inches, weighs about 1.5 oz and is about the size of a lemon. Nugget can now make well-defined facial expressions like squinting or frowning. Nugget might be growing hair on the head or face (like eyebrows, silly, not my signature mustache) If Nugget is a boy, his prostate gland is developing. Nugget now has a roof inside the mouth, and an intestinal cavity. His/her intestines are even producing a substance called meconium, which is the waste that will be stewing around until the first BM after birth. Nugget could even be sucking on the thumb as I type! I like to picture that over frowning!
This is officially the start of my 2nd trimester, please say a prayer that the nauseousness and other symptoms start to subside. I have started to feel a little achy in the abdomen, which is likely due to the stretching that is taking place in there.
Other than that, here is to a good week!

I did a 20 hour urine collection around 16 weeks! It's not so bad, it's just remembering to do it in the middle of the night for those 2am bathroom trips. My morning sickness went away at about 16-17 weeks so hopefully you'll get to enjoy the "honeymoon phase" of pregnancy that is the 2nd trimester soon! The 3 rd tri is a whole different ball of wax! Take care
ReplyDeleteI had to do a 24 hour urine sample at 35 weeks! That one, they made me stay in the hospital for so at least you are at home. :-) I'm sure all is well and I do hope you feel better soon. 2nd trimester is the best of the 3 so enjoye it! Take care!
ReplyDeleteI am several weeks into my 2nd trimester and it is MUCH better than the 1st. My energy is back but the belly is definitelu getting bigger. I go for my ultrasound Tuesday after next and will find out if Tadpole is a girl or boy. Not too long before you find out either, if you choose to. Hope your sickness passes soon. I'm sure it will.
